This actually is me, Colette (aka Margaret). I am messing around with my profile again because it's been more than a year since I opened this account and it seriously needed to be updated. Now that I've graduated, my life's changed some. I've become a raving Whovian, for one thing. About half my posts (and most of my userpics) deal with Doctor Who these days, whether it's a review or a fanfic or a cosplay project--or just me yakking about it.

The other half deals with politics. I'd said in the earlier draft of my profile that I was "passionately discontented enough to worry about Homeland Security frequenting my journal and good-humoured enough to laugh at my own paranoia"... I suppose it's still true, more or less, but I'm not so much about the jokes these days. I enjoy a good zing as much as the next malcontent, but to be honest it's got to the point where it's not funny anymore. As an historian, I see some disturbing patterns forming that I don't like at all. But, like most working Americans, I don't really have any power to effect noticable change--except by writing.

I talk a lot about gay rights issues. The movement may be dead in my state, but the defeat hasn't lessened my will to fight--and the incompetence of our local leaders, if anything, has increased it. I remain steadfastly Catholic despite my circumstances, and I'll occasionally discuss issues concerning the Church.

I am not a Democrat; I merely vote that way out of necessity. This is not a Democratic or sometimes even Democrat-friendly journal, so don't be surprised if I blast away at Edwards or Pelosi. I'm a Socialist, and therefore unencumbered by feelings of Party loyalty toward the Democrats in "power" today. (Note use of quotation marks.) It is open season on all stupid politicians and public figures in here. All.

I do write rants, the length of which I apologize for, the content of which I don't. I'll try to keep them clearly marked and appropriately cut.

Professionally, I've decided to make the transition from naval to labor history as I enter grad school. I love naval history, and I'd still like to pursue maritime archaeology some day... but at the end of the day, naval history is what I like. Labor history is who I am. When it comes to choosing a career, I'm happy to say I feel I should go with the latter.

I'm still an otaku, still go to cons and cosplay. My favorite book is still Heart of Darkness, and I still loathe Hemingway. I still love going to the opera. I still drive to work blasting Rammstein, darkwave, j-pop and punk on my car radio. I've discovered the joys of RP, having joined Phantas. And if the world gets to be too much, I go fishing.

That's me. Updated.
